“This piece is based on NASA’s first ever images of black holes. To create it, I used mineral pigments found deep beneath the earth—lapis lazuli, cobalt and orange ochre—then layered on carbon black and manganese pigments to create the effect of colors smoldering beneath a dark surface.”
