Latitudes of Possibility

Since 2018, I have been fortunate enough to embark on an annual adventure to the heart of Central Mexico, leaving the rain-soaked landscapes of Oregon behind to teach a printmaking class in the vibrant city of Guanajuato. What started as a modest gathering has blossomed into a cherished tradition, and in 2024, I was thrilled to welcome my 50th participant from various corners of the globe, including the United States, Canada, and Australia.

This journey has been more than just a teaching experience; it has been a transformative exploration of art, culture, and friendship. As I reflect on the past six years, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible connections forged with fellow artists and the joy of making new friends through the unique platform of this retreat.

One of the highlights each year is my evolving grasp of the Spanish language, a skill that deepens with each visit. Engaging with the local community and immersing myself in the rich tapestry of Guanajuato's culture has become an integral part of this annual pilgrimage. In collaboration with my gracious host and artist, Hugo, I've had the opportunity to experiment with a myriad of printmaking techniques, bringing an added layer of creativity and inspiration to our shared space.

The bond created through the collaborative efforts of hosting this retreat has not only enriched my teaching style but has also invigorated my personal art practice. The year 2024 proved to be no exception, with fresh insights and experiences adding new dimensions to both my creative journey and the artistic pursuits of my students.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that my passion for art and teaching would lead me to uncover the vibrant tapestry of Guanajuato. The opportunity to create in a place so brimming with color, flavor, and inspiration is testament to the profound impact creativity has to transcend boundaries, foster new connections, and immerse oneself in the beauty of an unfamiliar place and diverse cultures.

As I carry the warmth of Guanajuato into 2024, I eagerly anticipate the next chapter of this annual artistic rendezvous, where the canvas of creativity intertwines with the vibrant threads of shared experiences, creating a masterpiece that coalesces creativity, friendship, and boundless inspiration.

MAYBE 2025 WILL BE YOUR YEAR TO JOIN ME IN MEXICO FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE ART RETREAT EXPERIENCE!

A Heartfelt Thank You to Clatsop Community College: Celebrating Twenty Years in Wax

I extend a warm thank you to Clatsop Community College and the Royal Nebeker Gallery for graciously hosting a pop-up exhibition of my work, "Twenty Years in Wax," during my recent teaching stint in Mexico this past January. Despite the challenges posed by an ice storm in Astoria, the gallery's director, Kristin Shauck, displayed incredible kindness by extending the show for a few extra days. This unexpected turn of events allowed me not only to witness the response to my work but also to connect with CCC students and members of the local community.

As both a working artist and educator, there's nothing I love more than sharing insights into my creative process, the nuances of my work, and the fascinating history of the encaustic medium. It's a medium with a rich, ancient lineage, and introducing it to those unfamiliar with its wonders brings me immense joy. The warmth and enthusiasm with which I was welcomed by my new creative community here in Astoria are truly heartening.

In an exciting turn of events, I'm honored to share that Kristin invited me to jury the annual student show, a task I look forward to. Additionally, I am thrilled to announce that I will be conducting a workshop, further deepening my ties with this vibrant artistic hub.

For those who couldn't make it to the exhibition, fear not! You can catch up on my artistic journey and insights by listening to my interview with Carol Newman of KMUN or reading the feature in HipFish Monthly. Both offer a glimpse into the stories behind the artwork, providing a more intimate connection to the pieces showcased at the Royal Nebeker Gallery.

As I reflect on this beautiful intersection of art, community, and shared experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the support and warmth extended to me by Clatsop Community College and the Astoria community. Here's to forging more connections, inspiring creativity, and celebrating the enduring magic of encaustic art!

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with me! I love sharing my art and practice with you. Have questions? Get in touch!

—Elise

What an incredible week of mind blowing epiphanies. Lovely group and a GREAT host. Elise Wagner and Hugo Anaya are the best teachers and hosts. Highly recommend Guanajuato and Wagnerica Workshops. Great to be doing hands-on creating again with my art school friend and a new group of folks at Elise’s annual printmaking workshop in Guanajuato at Alma Del Sol Inn with spectacular host, and PSU alum Hugo Anaya. Gracias por todos!
