Irons

Over the years I developed an affinity for irons of all kinds, antique irons, small irons, big steam irons but there’s one very special travel iron that started it all.

It was a beautiful July morning before going to my day job at the time and I was walking my dog. Dew was still on the grass and as we approached the field I noticed a lump in the grass that looked like a kid’s jacket or something. At this time in my art practice, I was really at a point where I needed to begin some larger work for my first major solo show in Boston but I was feeling a certain inner hesitation for whatever reasons. As I grew closer to the shape in the grass, I discovered it was in fact a Black and Decker folding iron lying there. Really! I took this as a message to give myself permission to get started on those new, larger paintings. And that’s what I did. That folding iron still adorns a shelf in my studio an occasionally comes down to move some wax around on larger panels.

Watch this short video for a peek at my collection of antique and not so antique irons!
