With the move, I had to let go of some things, not all, but some. I’ve really loved being in my 50s, they will go down in my life book as one of my very favorite decades. There is so much on the horizon for my new trip around the sun that I look forward to digging into. One in particular is a new series of large prints I’ve been meaning to get to over the last two years. The wind down from Summer has now arrived and with it, a feeling of recharge and looking forward to cooler temps. I’m one of those oddballs who looks forward to stormy rainy days. Here in the Pacific Northwest, you can smell the rainy season coming into the air during September and October. There’s a certain motivation and set of rituals that the rainy season here brings. You can choose to be sad about the gray weather here or choose to see the beauty, colors, and comforts of home that beckon your inspiration. One of my favorite quotes that sits on my fridge is by Horace — “Rule your mind or it will rule you”. Everything in life and in creativity itself is a series of decisions and choices. This summer in particular was packed with activity that I am still reeling from. Beginning with my June exhibition “Wonder Lands” at Imogen Gallery, followed by the Astoria Open Studios Tour, teaching workshops, producing instructional videos for Painting with Fire, preparing for the August Hoffman Center of the Arts show and talk and other PR-related activities and we threw in a garage sale for good measure in preparation for the studio build! See recap below. All the activity of Summer, caused a certain late Summer limbo to set in so, I directed my energies to house projects choosing colors and preparing for some interior painting to further settle into our home. Decades of gallery exhibiting have provided me with the structure and motivation I need to stay on course with my creative drive and purpose. Galleries provide a way to share the work and connect with the broader community. I was recently asked if I make my art to sell it. The answer to this for me is that when I am steeped in the making, selling the work is not in the forefront of my mind. Of course, sales definitely factor in, but the first priority is always to create substantive meaningful work that is relatable, comes from a genuine place, that emotes, makes the viewer think and is thoughtfully made with heart. If all those things check through and someone responds enough to buy the art, that is the icing on my art cake! My birthday month always invites the energy to plan and gear up for the year ahead. Sean took a special interest in our house, designated by the City of Astoria as a Historic Landmark. He followed up with an email that contained a tax assesor report along with links to fire insurance maps of our property here in Astoria. As I embark on submitting a variance from the city to build a studio onto the existing garage, the information he provided was invaluable in supporting the goal. And, also, seamstresses and quilters. In a recent, somewhat arduous move to a small town, I wanted to heavily downsize before moving. I was intrigued by the commonalities and history of some of the items that made the cut; my great-great-great-grandmother’s ancient treadle sewing machine, a feed sack quilt made by my great-grandmother, an intricate and colorful quilt by my mom (every stitch made by hand), and my dad’s sailmaker’s seaming palm (which is a kind of heavy-duty thimble used in sail repair). I noted the comfort, utility, protection, and beauty passed down for generations through the humble use of needle and thread. This realization combined with moving to a quirky small town at the majestic meeting of river, mountains, and ocean (Astoria, Oregon USA) has provoked a dramatic change in my work, from painting to textile-based work. My work takes me to some pretty fun places! But, to be completely honest, after returning for Astoria Open Studios Tour, which was well underway, I’m exhausted, but in a good way. I went from one nurturing group of women to my friends and secret elves Ren and Sharon who helped prepare my studio and welcome guests! My class at MISSA had twelve students and it took place at the bucolic campus of Shawnigan Lake School, a 300 acre international boarding school for grades 6-12. This was the largest group I had taught in a while. Several of the students had years of experience using the medium along with some newbies. This range of experience levels created some initial challenges but developed into a wonderful micro-community by the end of the week. We enjoyed homemade brownies and Twizzlers every day at 2:30 and I was so pleased that the experienced students muttered “mind blown”, more than once! I even got the gift of a jar of home made honey from Ladysmith! One day, my back started hurting and students came to my rescue with back treatments they travel with. Such a kind and caring group of students! The class was listed as Intermediate / Advanced. Initially, a large encaustic painting workshop posed additional challenges such as managing any electrical breaker issues that come up in a class of this size. When this happened however, I had a very capable tech assigned, the awesome Colleen, who was taking care of it all in the background. Everyone worked together so beautifully! These days, I have to be more selective about how often I take time off site from the studio to teach, but its important to me that I continue to share the love of this ancient painting technique with the world. This series of twenty 14” x 11” paintings were originally conceived to reflect specific orientations of constellations during my time in Italy and the pandemic that followed. The reason I share this is that my house was situated in a highly developable area so, there was the potential it would be leveled for another apartment building with no parking. It was so important to me and, albeit, a totally romantic notion, that an artist buy the house to pass on the legacy and feed off of all the energy that was left there by so many of you, my workshops, friends, pets and my creative life there. The whole nebula, about 4000 light-years away, is an incredible 55 light-years wide and 20 light-years tall. This image shows only a small part of this turbulent star-formation region, about four light-years across. This stunning nebula was first catalogued in 1654 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna, who sought to record nebulous objects in the night sky so they would not be mistaken for comets. Since Hodierna’s observations, the Lagoon Nebula has been photographed and analysed by many telescopes and astronomers all over the world. The image, taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, represents the sharpest view ever taken of this region, called the Orion Nebula. More than 3,000 stars of various sizes appear in this image. Some of them have never been seen in visible light. These stars reside in a dramatic dust-and-gas landscape of plateaus, mountains, and valleys that are reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. The Orion Nebula is a picture book of star formation, from the massive, young stars that are shaping the nebula to the pillars of dense gas that may be the homes of budding stars. The bright central region is the home of the four heftiest stars in the nebula. The stars are called the Trapezium because they are arranged in a trapezoid pattern. Ultraviolet light unleashed by these stars is carving a cavity in the nebula and disrupting the growth of hundreds of smaller stars. Located near the Trapezium stars are stars still young enough to have disks of material encircling them. These disks are called protoplanetary disks or "proplyds" and are too small to see clearly in this image. The disks are the building blocks of solar systems. The bright glow at upper left is from M43, a small region being shaped by a massive, young star's ultraviolet light. Astronomers call the region a miniature Orion Nebula because only one star is sculpting the landscape. The Orion Nebula has four such stars. Next to M43 are dense, dark pillars of dust and gas that point toward the Trapezium. These pillars are resisting erosion from the Trapezium's intense ultraviolet light. The glowing region on the right reveals arcs and bubbles formed when stellar winds - streams of charged particles ejected from the Trapezium stars - collide with material. The faint red stars near the bottom are the myriad brown dwarfs that Hubble spied for the first time in the nebula in visible light. Sometimes called "failed stars," brown dwarfs are cool objects that are too small to be ordinary stars because they cannot sustain nuclear fusion in their cores the way our Sun does. The dark red column, below, left, shows an illuminated edge of the cavity wall. The Orion Nebula is 1,500 light-years away, the nearest star-forming region to Earth. Astronomers used 520 Hubble images, taken in five colours, to make this picture. They also added ground-based photos to fill out the nebula. N103B was a Type Ia supernova, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud — a neighbouring galaxy of the Milky Way. Owing to its relative proximity to Earth, astronomers observe the remnant to search for a potential stellar survivor of the explosion. The orange-red filaments visible in the image show the shock fronts of the supernova explosion. These filaments allow astronomers to calculate the original centre of the explosion. The filaments also show that the explosion is no longer expanding as a sphere, but is elliptical in shape. Astronomers assume that part of material ejected by the explosion hit a denser cloud of interstellar material, which slowed its speed.
