Navigating Abstraction in Graton, CA

Join me as guest artist at Sue Stover’s studio in Graton, CA for this special workshop.

From a creative standpoint, everything in our visual world is made up of abstract elements but how can they be translated into art that goes beyond what we see? In this workshop, you will work in multiples towards creating compelling compositions that form a narrative. Through the use of the medieval compositional tool of diptychs or triptychs, participants will have the opportunity to create interrelated multiples. We will use photography as a creative tool working from “found drawings”, photos of abstraction taken in every day life and nature. Participants will be assigned to create and choose from among ten found drawings to launch into their visual narrative. A brief slide show of diptych and triptych paintings will be shared and include some from my own diptych series’. Mark making warm up exercises, graphite transfer and the use of line and shape to create a form between pieces will also be addressed. Participants will learn how to detach from the outcome through working loosely and gesturally within a series to build layers of medium and thin veils of color. Fee: $695 + $30 materials.
